"...Siatista
being a mountain and stone land can not offer the right ground for a
financial development to its habitants, that' s why they early
started to travel to several civil centers inside Greece or abroad,
where they apply the commerce and others occupations.
...Since 1870 a lot of people started to settle to
Thessalonica...
...In
the past America was an unknown country for Siatista people. In
about 1887 the immigration to the New World begins..."
(from
the book of I. Apostolou, History of Siatista)
The
immigration of the Siatista people to the New World (America) was
more intense during the period 1904-1908 and through 1917. After the
World War II the route to Germany and Australia was open.
Whatever would be the country where the new emigrant
would go, the "goodbye" scenery was the same: Relatives and friends
of him and other emigrants would accompany him until the edge of
the city-until Saint Nikanora- and they would see him off with the
song- complain : " Mana, don't send me to America..." , played by the
local musicians.
People from Siatista who went abroad worked too much
in their new lands and supported with their legendary "cheques" the
economy of the motherland town.
